Encouraging children to brush their teeth correctly and consistently can be a challenge for parents. The hum kids app turns brushing into an exciting adventure by having kids battle monsters on their teeth using a connected smart toothbrush.
As a UX Design Intern, I worked on developing the new missions feature (released Feb 2023) and revamping the design system for better accessibility. I was responsible for research, prototyping mobile designs, user testing, and presenting design iterations to business.

Great to create a healthy habit! ★★★

The UX team was passionate about design learning and set aside time to attend workshops and communicate their learnings to the rest of the company, which I found to be very valuable during my time there.
Outside of design, one of the favorite things I did was come up with silly puns for worlds and achievements.
Over the course of 5 months, I gained experience in…
🔎 Adapting and updating a design system
The existing design system was outdated and inconsistent, and the new feature had patterns that the system had not addressed yet. I learned best practices for fitting new work into the system, while updating and renovating the old one.
✨ Advocating for design decisions
There was a lot of internal debate over implementing the feature I worked on, as well as the best way to structure it. I wanted to demonstrate to the team that certain patterns that working for similar apps does not necessarily mean it is the best choice in our context.
I learned how to better support the prototypes I presented with my design rationale with explicit consideration of the development, art, and business teams’ priorities and concerns.
🌐 Organizing Figma for efficient collaboration
This was the first time I worked in a Figma environment that was shared cross-team and used for developer handoff —big design files can get messy really quickly! One thing that I found useful was having tags that indicated the status of designs, which made navigation and onboarding much easier.
